Percy Jackson Series

Percy Jackson: son of Poseidon (god of the sea), monster killer, and a famous hero who is also a demigod; half god, half mortal. Travel into Percy Jackson's world, as he goes to Camp Half-Blood where his best friend Grover is a satyr, his Latin teacher is a centaur, the counsellor of camp is the god of wine and the Greek gods are alive, and kicking. Join Percy and his friends Annabeth and Grover on their quest to retrieve the Master Bolt, the weapon of Zeus that Percy "supposedly” stole, along with saving Percy's mother.

To achieve this and stop Zeus' plan for war, they must battle Medusa, the Echidna and the Chimera and face the horrors of the Underworld, where Percy learns that the true lightning thief was actually a friend at Camp Half-Blood this whole time.

I like how the book focuses on Greek Mythology and so you learn all about Ancient Greece without falling asleep. Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief is a great book with monsters, cool weapons, and even evil flying shoes! I also enjoyed how the story is about a quest, making it an adventurous book, but still squeezing some humour inside as well. My favourite characters are Percy Jackson, Chiron the centaur (his former Latin teacher) and Poseidon, Percy's dad. I recommend this book to any boy (or girl) aged 8 upwards.

Anne of Green Gables

This Post came from School Library Journal's blog - Fuse #8. I love the way this comment describes Anne of Green Gables - a real favourite of mine when I was growing up.
My copy looked like this:

Oh how I wanted to be Anne Shirley growing up! I could relate to her so much-I was imaginative and had a temper to match, so I always felt as though Anne was a kindred spirit. And who wouldn’t want to end up with Gilbert Blythe?? This is a series that whenever I would read them, I would find myself in a “reading fog”. I would stop reading and have to remember that I wasn’t on Prince Edward Island with Anne and Diana. It always seemed like such a magical place and I wished for those books to be real. A friend said it best when she told me “there’s always a Anne book for every stage of life.” I think that’s what makes them timeless. – Sarah (Green Bean Teen Queen)

The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate

This is a wonderful story about an easy going gorilla called Ivan, who lives out his days viewing the world from his cage in a small circus. His two companions are an elephant named Stella and a stray dog who sleeps in Ivan's cage at night and keeps him company.
This simply-told, easy to read story about friendship will surely take its place alongside the animal favourites such as Charlotte's Web and Sheep Pig. Like these classics Ivan has his own story to tell and a brave mission to undertake if he is to make a difference for some new young arrivals at the Exit 8 Big Top Mall.

Highly recommended!
